On a beautiful September day with hardly a cloud in the sky, the sun shone brightly, setting the tone for an incredible celebration. The morning preparations were filled with excitement, with Stevie getting ready in one of the huts while Cat got ready in the main house. It really is a great way to get to know each other before the big day and if you are not used to having a camera pointed at you, it's the perfect way to get some practice in before the big day. I do approach these shoots in a totally different way than I would a wedding. During a wedding you have so much going on, surrounded with friends and family, so I can just capture everything that's going on in a totally natural way. Pre-wed's are a little different as there is only the 3 of us, so I do need to direct a lot more than I normally would need. It gives us chance to get really creative and you end up with some really cool photos from the shoot. Hyde Bank Farm Wedding Hyde Bank Farm is a stunning wedding venue set in the beautiful Cheshire countryside. Farmed by the Blackhurst family for over a century, the barn and endless grounds are the perfect setting for a beautiful wedding. A brief history of the building, On the far end of the building is a date stone marked ‘ARH 1655’. It is a grade two listed building because of its architectural and historical interest. The building used to be a barn, where horse-drawn carts would pull in to unload hay and corn sheaves into the lofts. The buildings were once home to Ann Hyde who went on to marry James II, King of England! How cool is that? The ceremony room is set on the first floor. With its stone walls and oak beams its a beautiful room to tie the knot. The wedding breakfast and reception room is wonderfully lit and the perfect setting to celebrate the night away. The photograph opportunities are endless. There is a lovely little church just 5 minutes walk away where Amber and Youl would tie the knot. Wedding guests can mingle on the lawn before the wedding celebrations that take place in the Bank Barn at the side of the venue. Askham Hall is instantly one of our favourite wedding venues. A Beautiful Wedding We arrived at Askham Hall on the day of the wedding. Amber & Youl stayed at the venue the evening before and were getting ready in separate rooms. Such a unique venue for a wedding. "it's just like Hogwarts" is a very common phrase you hear when walking around the beautiful grounds. This was the chosen venue for Kara & Dan's wedding. St Marks church in the Worsely area of Greater Manchester is were they tied the knot. It really is a beautiful church and being able to capture all the emotion from the front of the church was a joy. New Hill Farm Stud New Hill Farm Stud is a working farm in Manchester, with horses, ducks and everything else you would expect to find on a farm. They had a teepee set up on the field with hay bails and a wood fired pizza oven. The kids had football nets, bats and balls to keep themselves entertained, and it didn't take long for the adults to get involved in too, including the bride. Emma had so much fun playing rounders with the children. This time we decided on Castlefield. Such a quirky backdrop next to the Manchester canal with its old Roman walls and cool bridges. We met Charlotte & Craig at Dukes 92 next to the canal to chat about all things wedding and of course downed a couple of beers in the sunshine. We then made our way round Castlefield and got some really cool shots of them both along the way. For some reason I always come across an abandoned shopping trolley on these city shoots. As you can see they are both just naturals in front of the camera, maybe the beers helped a bit but they worked the camera like models. :D We had a great time in the Manchester summer sun with Charlotte and Craig. Jade liked the idea of a pre-wedding/engagement session that we offer to our couples to get a bit of practice of being photographed before their big day. It is also a nice way to get to know each other a little and gets me out of the house and away from the computer from time to time. Rivington was the chosen location for the shoot. It is probably the nicest part of Bolton in Lancashire and a lot of couples like to have their shoots there. The sun was shining and the weather was glorious. We had a walk up to the china gardens and got some natural photographs of Jade and Jared, we got a few cool portraits too. We had some great banter along the way, mainly aimed at me for nearly slipping on my arse over and over again. Catrin and Chris actually live in Newcastle but wanted to have their wedding where Catrin's Mum Llinos grew up. We met them both at our local pub couple of months before their big day and hit it off instantly. On the day of the wedding we met Catrin and the bridal party at a holiday home they were staying in on Anglesey not too far away from Carreglwyd where they would be having their wedding. We then made our way to the venue to meet Chris and the wedding guests. As we walked around the corner were greeted by the most colourful array of people. They got married with an awesome ceremony in the boathouse next to the lake. A perfect setting. After a few drinks everybody made their way to the huge tent for food and speeches. The three best men moved everybody into the stables for an hilarious speech that they had filmed earlier and played on a large projector screen. Everybody was in fits of laughter. Oh my, what a party! And a very classy one it was too. We met up with Claire & Tom a couple of times to discuss their wedding plans. We just love photographing weddings in the city centre of Manchester, so get very excited at the opportunity of shooting at the very cool Great John Street Hotel. We had a little practice run with a pre-wedding shoot at their beautiful home in Bolton before the big day. (which can be viewed here.) On the day of the wedding we met Tommy and the lads downstairs where they were getting ready, before making our way up to meet Claire for bridal preparations. There was such a great buzz at the hotel as the guests started to arrive in their black tie attire. They had a beautiful bespoke, humanist ceremony and you could see how much love these two have for each other. Drinks were served on the rooftop lounge, which has a fantastic view of the city. After a few hilarious speeches, the party really got into full swing with a perfect first dance by Claire and Tommy, followed by singing, cartwheels, backflips, and a mega dance off, all helped with a couple of sips (cough) of the good old Jäger bombs! A Victorian neo-gothic building that has such stunning light in there with it's huge windows. It really is a photographers dream to photograph weddings there. Sadly Manchester town hall is to close it's doors for 5 years for a huge refurbishment. I really will miss shooting there. What a fantastic idea! Sunny, colourful Blackpool by the sea, with an awesome couple, Laura and Adam. We first met Laura and Adam a couple of years ago when we shot Laura's sister, Kate's and Craig's summer garden wedding. We were thrilled when Laura told us that her and Adam had got engaged and wanted us to capture their big day. First things first though, the pre-wedding shoot. I think Blackpool is a fantastic location for a couple's photoshoot. With the funfair and all the arcades as a backdrop, you cant go much wrong. We met them both on the beach and got a few shots of them walking down the front. We also got some really cool shots under the pier before finishing off the shoot with some ice-cream. Luckily, we did have that date available and I just had to give Laura a call because she sounded ace! And that she was. We had a great chat on the phone and decided to meet her and Simon at Victoria Warehouse in Manchester to discuss their wedding plans. They explained how they were looking for a natural, laid back style of photography to capture their special day. Again we hit it right off and couldn't wait for the wedding. On the day of the wedding we met Simon and his pals at his and Laura's very cool house in Manchester. We met Jess & Adam a couple of times before their big day, first at their home and then at a cool little bar in Prestwich near to where they would be married. Like all our couples who book us they wanted a natural approach to their wedding photography. It also helped that we hit it off from the moment we met. Natural wedding photography On the day of their wedding, we met Jess and her family at her mother and Fathers home in Bolton. Jess looked stunning in her wedding dress with her beautiful long veil. What a stunning part of the country! It was a cold November day, but the sun was shining bright. The service at St George's Church in Pontesbury was just beautiful, lots of tears and laughter, then a few more tears.. We met these two quite some time ago now in a good old Starbucks in Bolton. I say it's some time ago but it is crazy how quick these weddings come around. We find that having these sessions with our couples set them up nicely for their wedding day and having their photograph taken all day is a breeze. Beautiful golden light in good old Bolton! Believe me, this is very rare. From the moment we met these two we knew we wanted to capture their story. They have such busy lives, with Majella training to be a midwife and Paul running what seems like up and down the country. For their pre-wedding shoot we decided to stay local. These two were actually childhood sweethearts at school and fate brought them back together again. They love to go up Rivington together with their children, but I put to them that we try somewhere different as most of my pre-wedding portfolio has been photographed around Rivington, plus they are going to be having their wedding there so why not mix it up a bit. So we decided on Anglezark, just round the corner from Rivington. :D We do really have some beautiful spots in the Lancashire countryside. It was so so hard picking these photographs for this post and I almost give up more than once. To say 2016 has been an incredible year would be an understatement! It really has been a crazy year hasn't it. So many famous icons taken away from us way to soon. Bowie, Muhammad Ali and so many British legends we have all been inspired by growing up. They planned to have a small gathering of close family at the Panacea after tying the knot at the Manchester registry office. Castlefield Rooms was the venue for the huge party afterwards. Deb and Ben love Manchester just as much as we do, and when they told us their plans we knew this wedding was going to be right up our street. We love The Castlefield area of Manchester, with its cobbled streets, canals and bridges, there are so many great opportunities for photographs (and drinks) :) We met them both in the morning at the Radisson Blu hotel in the city centre, before making our way to the registry office. After the lovely intimate ceremony we walked down the city streets of Manchester. Everybody we passed were so nice, congratulating the newly weds as we passed. What an absolutely stunning part of the world Lake Como is! We love to travel, so being able to photograph a couple with so much love for each other, on their perfect day, in such a stunning setting makes our job a real joy. Relais Villa Vittoria looks right over the lake, with breathtaking views. After getting some shots at the villa, I left with Glen and the boys to get some lunch further down the lake, before getting picked up by a speedboat which took us back to the venue for the ceremony. The day was just perfect! Everybody had such a wonderful day in the Italian sunshine. At midnight a boat turned up at the venue to take everybody out on the lake were the party really stepped up and went on into the early hours. We met them again the day after at the villa for a wind down pool party and a game of water polo. "miss the ball, you have a shot!" Nicola & Matt asked us to capture their wedding when we met them at the pub last year. They both love traveling round the world together as we do, so we hit it off right away. They also fancied a pre-wedding shoot before their big day. We decided to meet up in Belmont, Bolton, but like there is some irresistible, invisible magical force that always seems to pull me back to this place, we ended up starting the shoot up Rivington. We were so excited when we met up with these two and they told us their plans for their Manchester city centre wedding at The Panacea and The Castlefield Rooms. Even their wedding invitation screamed Manchester with it's Hacienda (you either know or you don't) design. We met Deb & Ben at Entwistle just before the golden hour of light for their pre-wedding shoot. A lovely part of Lancashire that many of our couples like to go. After a walk round the reservoir and through the woodland, we managed to just catch the sun as it began to set. We didn't get many of those warm glowing evenings this summer, so it really is nice when we do. The light made for some really lovely photos too. Oh it rained, it rained and rained, it rained from every direction but that did not stop what was to be such an amazing wedding at Newton Hall in Northumberland. This was my first ever wedding in the North East of the Uk. Northumberland is just stunning. We arrived the day before to take in some sights. We met Holly at the venue the following morning where she was getting ready in her room before going finding Ben in the bar area (of course) with his best men. The rain normally doesn't stop me from persuading the bride and groom to go outside for some natural quirky shots in the rain but this was something else. Luckily Newton Hall is such a beautiful venue that shooting the whole wedding indoors was not a problem at all. We managed to get some shots of Holly and Ben next to some really lovely window light. They already had some practice in front of the camera when we met up a few weeks before in the Lake district, which can be viewed here. Katie had described how she fell in love with Beeston Manor as soon as her and Andy set eyes on it. A farmyard barn set in the stunning Ribble valley, Lancashire, it really is a beautiful venue. We had met up with Katie and Andy a few times to discuss their big day and also had a pre-wedding shoot at Formby beach (which can be viewed here) for a lovely day out and a bit of a practice run. On the big day we first went to meet Andy and the lads at the best mans house then made our way to Katie where she was getting ready at home. We got a delivery of Bolton's famous Carrs pasties, they really are so good! The wedding ceremony at Beeston Manor was filled with tears and laughter. The tears mainly coming from Andy waiting for his bride to be. He really did get emotional and it was beautiful to capture it all. We got some really lovely shots of them both when we had a little alone time. These two have such a laugh with each other. I have been wanting to do a shoot at Formby for quite some time now, so I put the idea across to Katie and Andy who were more than happy with the idea. None of us had ever been to Formby beach before which is a bit embarrassing, 1- its only an hour drive from us, and 2- it's bloody beautiful! Katie and Andy picked us up in their spanking clean VW van. The camera came out of the bag soon as we hopped in. At Formby there's a little wooded area with lots of pine trees and some grassy sand dunes that lead to the beach. The shoot started off pretty nippy but after all the climbing we had to do we started to work up a sweat. These two were both naturals in front of the camera, even though Andy had a bit of a nightmare with his hair blowing all over the place! :D Katie & Andy are to be wed at Beeston Manor in a couple of week, and we will be there to capture their amazing story, cant wait! We love Manchester so much, so to have to the opportunity to photograph a wedding in the city always gets me excited. Laura got ready for her big day at one of her Bridesmaids beautiful home at the posh end of Bolton. Whilst David was just around the corner staying at a local hotel, so it was great to be able to visit both of them and capture all the excitement. After a lovely Christmassy ceremony, we made our way to the Radisson Hotel hotel in the city centre of Manchester. After weeks of terrible weather we had a really lovely day for the wedding. There is something so surreal and wonderful walking through the city centre with a newly wed couple. Everybody we passed congratulated Laura and David, it was very special. I love bridal preparations, all the buzz and excitement is a joy to capture and a lovely way to start the story. St Mary's Church in Horwich, Bolton is where Emily and David got married. We then made our way to The Sirloin in Preston Lancashire. Its just round the corner from Houghton tower and I was amazed with the story I was told about this place. Legend has it that King James 1 was a guest at Houghton tower, he enjoyed a loin of beef he was served so much that he actually knighted it! hence the name "Sir" Loin. Crazy, I know! Wooo Hoo!! This is my first blog post on my brand new spanking website. I really do need to catch up with my blogging, and what better way than to share Emily and David's pre-wedding shoot. I was very excited about shooting this wedding as the groom is a very dear friend of mine who i have known for most of my life so this was very special. There was a little worry as i would be surrounded by other close friends and trying to get into work mode with that rowdy lot could prove to be quite challenging. So after an epic memorable (well some of it) stag do, the day had finally arrived and in the very predictable British fashion, it was raining. Lucy and I made our way to Jen and Neil's family home in Bolton to meet with Jen and her bridesmaids. Neil and the boys were only round the corner so we could go back and forth to get some shots of them all getting ready. St Bede's parish church is were Jen and Neil would become man and wife. The vicar preferred if i did not take pictures during the ceremony and this does happen quite often but sometimes i just cannot help myself, wrong or right i have to sneak a couple of shots in. After the ceremony however the vicar was more than happy with me getting some shots of the newly weds signing the register. We met Linzi and the girls at the Capelli lounge in Westoughton, Bolton where they were having hair and makeup done and then back to linzi's home for her to get in a beautiful wedding dress. We made our way to the venue as Leigh was arriving in spectacular fashion by helicopter so we could definitely not afford to miss that grand entrance. The rain and thunder did not dampen the mood of the waiting guests but as the clouds parted and the rain cleared we could see Leigh's helicopter making its way in the distance. After some beautiful readings by the girls and a few tears, Linzi and Leigh tied the knot :) We then made our way outside for some ice cream and canapés by which this time summer had returned and the sun was shining. We got some formal photographs of the guests ( Aunties love a group shot ;) ) and dragged Linzi and Leigh off for some natural shots of them both together. Originally Kate was going to celebrate her 30th birthday at her mothers home in Bolton but then thought what the hell and decided to get married at her mothers house instead. When they told me and Lucy this idea we thought we have to be a part of this. I am really loving these design your own weddings i am seeing a lot of lately so was really excited when Kate and Craig asked us to photograph their wedding. So the day arrived and what a glorious day it was, the sun was shining on Bolton. When we arrived at Kate's mums house we was blown away with how they had decorated the garden, it really did look beautiful. We got a few shots of Kate getting ready before making our way to Craig who was at his own house to get some snaps of him and the lads. Craig is a professional snooker player ( i had to drop that in ;) ) and travels all over the world all year round playing with all the best in the game. We had previously visited Linzi and Leigh at their home in Westoughton and talked about the big day and the all important Hen and Stag do's :) So when we got in touch again to plan the pre wedding shoot Linzi said she liked the sound of Southport and they all fancied going to the beach so we arranged to meet there on a sunny Sunday afternoon. We met on the promenade and the sun was beaming high in the sky, not the best conditions for photography but we improvised and had some breaks when clouds would pass over to get some really nice shots of them all. It really is a beautiful building, they should shoot the next Harry Potter film there :) I have been looking forward to Lauren & Brads wedding ever since their epic Pre wedding shoot we did at Etwistle reservoir (which can be viewed here) And this one did not disappoint. The theme of the wedding was sweets and love. All the girls were getting ready at Laurens mums house and Brad and the boys were getting ready at their home which is just over the road so it was easy going to and from Lauren and Brad. Lauren looked amazing in her dress and took everybody's breath away when she came down then stairs to her family, and the look on her dads face was a "picture" when he saw his little girl as he walked through the door. A vintage bus took Brad and the guests to Bolton school and a classy Rolls Royce would take Lauren. The ceremony which was held in the big hall was a mix of happy emotions, We was even joined live and direct from Canada by Laurens Aunty Lindsay thanks to an Ipad and some modern technology. OK, where to start with this one. Im shooting Lauren and Brads wedding at the end of May at Bolton school which is in Bolton, funnily enough. We arranged to do their pre wedding shoot a month prior to the wedding but never really had a location in mind, that's until Lauren got in touch and told me her dream image for me to capture. She told me that she would love an image of her reenacting the scene from dirty dancing, the one were Patrick Swayze lifts baby up with them both in the lake, to say i was shocked was an understatement. We live in Bolton, its April and the areas with water must be absolutely freezing! i asked Lauren if she was sure about this idea and she told me its her all time favourite film, along with Willow and reenacting a scene from Willow would be pretty bizarre. So we decided on Entwistle Reservoir which is on the road to Blackburn. On the day i picked Lauren & Brad up around 11am and made our way to the location. Just before the reservoir there is a large patch of woodland which i thought looked pretty cool to start the shoot. Deb and Stu's big day finally arrived. Garstang country hotel and golf club was the venue. We met Deb in her hotel room and the fun had already begun. Everybody rushing around Deb and preparing her for the best day ever. I got a few preparation shots of Deb and her bridesmaids when Stu phoned me to tell me that he had arrived at the venue. What better way to calm the nerves than to smash a few golf balls on the driving range on the hotels golf course. I even had a go myself and to my surprise smashed a few balls at quite some distance, beginners luck? maybe, happy Gilmore comes to mind! ;) So after the ceremony and a few group shots we stole Deb and Stu away from everybody else, grabbed a golf buggy and had a spin around the course with me hanging on for dear life at the back. :D There was lots of laughs and a few tears with the speeches and we got to go outside one more time while the sun was setting on such a beautiful day. For the past couple of summers Manchester's northern quarter and our favourite establishments close off the streets and throw an amazing street party that covers Thomas Street, Edge Street, Tib Street and High Street. Thousands of people turn up for the barbecue stalls, funfair rides and the stages for live DJs and bands, and they even throw a dog show. Some people in fancy dress with lots of different bars having different themes. I just love street photography and this was the perfect opportunity for me to take my camera and my 50mm to the coolest streets of Manchester and capture the lots of different, diverse people that make up this wonderful city. Huge well done to the organisers CityCo and may this annual event continue for many years to come. We had a great day and i still couldn't stop taking pictures when we went for a little something to eat in china town and the train journey home. Victoria and Christopher got married at St Micheal's church in Howe Bridge Bolton. I turned up at Victoria's parents house where she was getting ready with her sisters who were bridesmaids. You wouldn't know to look at her on the pictures but believe it or not Victoria was actually 5 months pregnant! (shocking i know) We made our way to the church where Christopher was eagerly waiting for his bride to be. The reception was held at Bolton whites hotel at the Reebok stadium where the mighty Bolton Wanderers (cough) play their home games. The room has a spectacular view of the pitch. I was really excited when Keith asked me to photograph him and Claire together in Manchester city centre. It was even more exciting as it was Christmas time and the German Christmas markets were in town. I've actually known Keith for quite some time but not seen him in a while as he has been living away so i was over the moon when he got in touch and asked me to photograph him and his girlfriend. We met up with Keith and Claire at Dukes 92, a great bar in the heart of Castlefield. We all ordered some pizza, burgers and chips (and a couple of cheeky beers ;)) and after getting that lot down made our way round the city. I really love Manchester, to me its got to be the coolest and one of the most diverse cities in the world. It was a bit chili but that didn't stop Keith and Claire having a great time and as you can see they are both naturals in front of the camera. Winter nights kick in pretty quick in the UK and we finished our day off at the Christmas markets with a nice cup of mulled wine.
