As a natural wedding photographer, I’ve photographed weddings at The Black Friar, but this venue is particularly close to my heart because it’s also where my wife and I got married!

Having experienced the venue from both sides of the camera, I know what makes it such a special place.

So, whether you’ve already booked your wedding or you’re considering The Black Friar, here’s my guide to the venue, including the ceremony spaces, wedding receptions, food, photography locations and a few useful planning tips.

The Black Friar Wedding

The Black Friar Wedding Venue in Salford

Located on Blackfriars Road in Salford, The Black Friar is a historic pub and restaurant just a short distance from Manchester city centre. Originally built in 1886, the building underwent an extensive restoration before reopening in 2021.Today, it combines the character of a traditional Victorian pub with modern interiors and a beautiful outdoor Garden.

One of the things I particularly like about The Black Friar is how the different spaces work together. The Garden, Tavern and restaurant areas create a relaxed setting where guests can enjoy themselves throughout the day.

Whether you’re planning an intimate celebration or a larger wedding with family and friends, there’s plenty of flexibility.

Getting Married at The Black Friar

The Black Friar is licensed for wedding ceremonies, meaning you can get married and celebrate at the same venue. There are several ceremony spaces available, each with its own character.

The Garden

One of the standout features for a Black Friar wedding is the garden. Surrounded by greenery, it offers a beautiful outdoor setting that feels surprisingly intimate considering you’re so close to Manchester city centre.

It’s a lovely space for wedding ceremonies and drinks receptions, with plenty of room for guests to relax, enjoy a drink and celebrate together.

From a photography point of view, it’s fantastic for capturing natural moments throughout the day.

The Tavern

The Tavern is another fantastic space at The Black Friar.Covered and heated, it combines the character of the venue with a relaxed atmosphere that’s ideal for wedding ceremonies. I’ve photographed a ceremony in the Tavern, and it’s a lovely setting.

With guests gathered together, there’s a real sense of intimacy. It’s also brilliant for capturing the smiles, laughter and emotional reactions during the ceremony.

The Sanctuary

For couples planning a smaller wedding, The Sanctuary offers a more intimate ceremony setting.

The Black Friar has different options depending on your guest numbers, so I’d recommend arranging a visit and exploring the spaces with the wedding team.

Wedding Receptions at The Black Friar

One of the biggest attractions of The Black Friar is the variety of spaces available for your wedding celebrations. Whether you’re planning a wedding breakfast, drinks reception or evening party, the venue offers plenty of flexibility.

The Glass Room

The Glass Room is a bright, stylish space with natural light and greenery. Its modern design complements the traditional character of the pub, creating a lovely setting for a wedding breakfast or private celebration.

The natural light is also a bonus when photographing the speeches.

The Tavern and Garden

The Tavern and Garden work particularly well together. Guests can move between the covered Tavern and outdoor Garden while remaining close to the celebrations. It’s something I really like about the layout. The spaces feel connected, which helps create a brilliant atmosphere.

People can enjoy a drink, catch up with friends and spend time together, with everything happening around them. It’s a great setup for a sociable wedding and for capturing those spontaneous moments.

Exclusive Wedding Venue Hire

The Black Friar also offers exclusive venue hire, allowing couples to make use of different spaces throughout their wedding. There are options for intimate celebrations and larger weddings, with arrangements depending on guest numbers.

The wedding team can talk you through the available packages and how the venue can be set up for your day.

Wedding Food at The Black Friar

If there’s one thing The Black Friar is known for, it’s fantastic food!

As well as being a wedding venue, The Black Friar is a popular restaurant in its own right, so food is a big part of the experience. The venue offers different dining options depending on the style of wedding you’re planning.

You might choose a traditional three-course wedding breakfast, a relaxed BBQ or another menu suited to your celebrations.

There are also options for drinks receptions and smaller bites throughout the day.

Whether you’re planning a formal wedding breakfast or a relaxed celebration with family and friends, the team can help you explore the available menus. And with the quality of food The Black Friar is known for, your guests are in for a treat!

Wedding Photography at The Black Friar

The Black Friar wedding photography works particularly well for couples who prefer natural, relaxed photographs. My approach is all about capturing real moments throughout the day. The laughter during drinks, reactions during speeches, guests catching up and all those little moments happening in between.

The Garden is particularly good for natural photographs, while the Tavern provides a lovely setting for ceremonies and celebrations.

Couple Portraits Around The Black Friar

One of the advantages of getting married at The Black Friar is the variety of backdrops available for photographs. You’ve got the greenery of the Garden, the character of the building and the surrounding urban streets. It’s a great combination for couples who want a mixture of natural and city-style wedding photographs. And because everything is close by, there’s no need to travel anywhere for your portraits. The front of The Black Friar is a fantastic spot for photographs, especially with the impressive seasonal displays they put on throughout the year.

I’m not one for taking couples away from their wedding for an hour-long photoshoot. Usually, around 10 to 15 minutes is plenty. A quick wander, some relaxed photographs together, then straight back to enjoying the celebrations.
If the light is particularly good later in the day, we can always head outside for another quick set of photographs.

Planning Your Wedding at The Black Friar

When planning your Black Friar wedding, it’s worth thinking about how you’ll use the different spaces throughout the day.

Choosing Your Ceremony Space

The Garden, Tavern and Sanctuary each offer something different.

I’d recommend visiting the venue, looking around the spaces and discussing your guest numbers with the wedding team. Seeing everything in person will help you decide which setting suits your plans.

Planning for the Manchester Weather

We’re in Manchester, so it’s always worth having a plan for the weather! If you’re hoping for an outdoor ceremony in the Garden, speak to the venue about the arrangements if it rains.

The Tavern is covered and heated, and there are other indoor spaces, but it’s worth confirming the alternatives available for your wedding.

Making the Most of Your Day

One of the best things about The Black Friar is how the different areas work together. The connected spaces help guests move naturally between the ceremony, drinks reception and celebrations. And remember, your wedding day goes crazy quickly! I always encourage couples to spend as much time as possible enjoying themselves with family and friends.

A few group photographs, a short couple portrait session and plenty of time celebrating.

If you are looking for a natural, award winning wedding photographer to tell your story, I would love to hear your plans!
